Understanding a Normal Apgar Score

The APGAR test is a very quick assessment of your baby 1 minute after birth and again 5 minutes after birth. The first test assesses how well the baby handled birth while the second test lets your doctor see how your baby is doing in the world. A doctor, nurse or midwife can perform this test to examine your baby’s color, reflexes, muscle tone, heart rate and respiration. Each category gets a score of 0, 1 or 2.

What is a Normal APGAR Score?
Your baby’s APGAR score can range from 0 to 10 and a higher score indicates a baby that is doing well after birth. Very few babies receive a perfect score, as almost all babies are born with blue hands and feet. Any score between 8 and 10 is considered normal. Remember, your baby’s APGAR score is just a simple assessment of your baby’s overall health and does not indicate long-term or permanent problems. If your baby has a normal APGAR score, this means they need only routine care after birth and no emergency medical intervention.
