1st, 2nd & 3rd hand smoke on pregnant moms

Knowing that smoking is really bad to pregnant moms and may lead to pregnancy and childbirth complications. But what about the 2nd and 3rd hand smoke. How intense its effects could be to the unborn child and his life later on? What are the steps to avoid this?

As far as I know, 2nd hand smoke is actually worst than you actually smoking... that is the reason why, most of the times the people who live with smokers are the one who suffer and get sick more. Also, kids of smokers are not really that healthy... not that they are gravely ill but more like asthmatic or prone to coughing and flu.

My dad was a chain-smoker. I grew up to be a bit on the asthmatic side. My immune system will not really give me Olympic medals. :S Stay away from smokers. If you live with one (or more) ask them to smoke outside the house or at least away from you. Keep ashtrays clean too.

Pregnant or not, 2nd hand smoke is not good for the health.

Thanks ladies! Yeah, I agree with all of you. Pregger or not, its hazardous effects are always given. I heard that its effects to the unborn child could lead to pre-term birth or even stillbirth, which is the worst of all. The 3rd hand smoking thing also surprises me big time. Times do change...

All of the above are very harmful to you and to your unborn child, not mentioning that they're also harmful to the people around you.

Yes, 3rd hand smoking is surprising. Read on:

Thanks for sharing Abana. I'm surprised how smoking evolves alongside the advancement of our technology. Decades have passed and I've only known about 1st and 2nd hand smoking. And now we've got the 3rd. I'm getting worried for our kids' future. I fervently hope and pray that they would still have a world worth living in for the next generations...

@ Cadelaria - Yes, you're right upon saying that. These terrible things continue to develop too so it's far best to make our health our utmost priority.

Oh Abana that's scary. It's sad to know that we're not safe even when we ourselves don't smoke or inhale it. Oh, times have indeed changed.

E-cigs, though reportedly safer than actual cigarettes, are still harmful to the expectant mom especially if she uses it herself. Yikes! Then again, you're right. I guess it's better and safer to use e-cigs if you've got pregnant women and kids at home.

Let's see which is the lesser evil. I'm sharing this piece from an article about e-cigs at http://www.primehealthchannel.com/el...e-effects.html

It is a fact that no electronic cigarette company is endorsed by any health organization. This is the reason why there has been an effective Electronic Cigarette ban in a number of countries like Canada. While Electronic Cigarettes are less dangerous compared to real cigarettes, they are still a threat to smokers. For an effective removal of smoking habit, it is best to give up smoking completely. It is best not to try to stop smoking with Electronic Cigarettes.

Hmm...

@Fanny - Thanks for that info. Electronic cigarettes are the lesser evil. My hubby uses one and I've tried it a few times. The different flavors are a whole lotta fun! Then again it is still best to be used in moderation no matter how lesser of an evil it may be.

Perhaps e-cigs are very much helpful if a person is on a "withdrawal phase".

Yikes, it's equally harmful. But I second Abana, if it's being used as an aid during the withdrawal phase then I'd go for one.

It's still not a good idea for a pregnant mum to be puffing an e-cig. Disgusting IMHO! Imagine risking your baby's life...
