Cat/Dog-Loving Moms!

Did/do you have a dog or cat while you were pregnant? What are the advantages and disadvantages of having them? I have cats my whole life and just let them be... I don't think they're harmful to babies but I never really asked a professional about it.

I have a chihuahua even before I had a kid. I still have him with me and no problems at all! :)

I am a dog lover myself! If you're a dog lover then perhaps having a dog around will surely make you enjoy your day no matter how stressful it is. Though I didn't have a dog on my first pregnancy, with my second one we had 2 at home! Good thing I've got my eldest son to help me take good care of them. I've got 2 labs. Now our Welsch Corgi is a new addition. What a cute hotdog! :D

Not really a hard-core dog lover but my Chow-Chow Hershey makes me smile big time!

No dogs for me... anyway, some say it would be wise to get a hypo-allergenic dog just to be safe... if you or kids have asthma

I'm a cat lover! I have a Persian cat and her name is Felicity! She's so adorable and huggable! :)

I love dogs too and that's something I share with my hubby and our child soon, for sure! :)

I think I have read somewhere that having your baby exposed to pets will help boost your baby's immune system. Of course, some dog breeds are really great guard dogs for babies :)

I see... I am just a bit paranoid about it... there are so many incidents where dogs attack kids... this kinda makes me afraid of dogs...:(

Thank you so much for the replies! My sister has 4 cats and is now expecting a baby... Of course, being a cat lover, she does not want to give them away but we are wondering if the cats might cause asthma or allergies if they are exposed to the baby.

I guess it's not a good idea to have cats around a newborn baby. Probably not letting them enter the bedroom, whatsoever. Better for your sister to talk to her obstetrician of any advice she deems fit.

Wouldn't that be too drastic? If her sister is a pet lover, I believe she would consider her cat as part of the family...

I'm a pet lover myself and I don't want to have my pet being around my newborn baby because of the fact that we'll never know if something unfortunate transpires. Well, accidents do happen and I don't wanna compromise my baby from possible scratches, bites and kicks (or worse, knocking on wood) from my pet. If my baby reaches toddlerhood then I guess it'll all be fine for my pet to hang around with my baby.

I completely understand your sentiments. I've read several news already about babies getting hurt by pets. They may be accidents but the damage that it costs is not good at all.

That makes sense. I am not much of a pet lover myself but I am surrounded by people who are. Perhaps pet owners should just make sure that their pets are not naughty and do not have bad tempers. :S

Maine Coons are good cats to have if you have toddlers :D They can take toddler abuse pretty well without getting pissed off (I could learn a thing or 2 from them actually) :p

Precisely! But we never can tell. It's still best to be on the safe side, making sure that there's enough distance between our newborns and our pets. Sanitation and our pet's health too are essential.

Right. I myself is a pet-lover but when we're talking about our newborns it's a far different issue.
