What is an Ectopic Pregnancy? Signs & symptoms?

I know that cigarette smoking while pregnant could increase the risk of having an ectopic pregnancy. But what are the signs and symptoms of it? What treatments are there for an ectopic pregnancy?

abdominal pain... spotting... cramps... some say they even have diarrhea...

Ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy located outside the uterus. It may occur in the cervix, ovary and other locations. Indeed, this is extremely risky especially for the baby. That's why regular OB consultations is HIGHLY SUGGESTED on the first few weeks of pregnancy to see the pregnancy's condition itself and rule out any problems.

Yeah, that's what my OB told me. Albeit expensive, frequent ultrasound especially on the first trimester is very much needed to know the baby's status immediately. This condition is super scary for moms!

Ditto to Gaetana... It is undoubtedly true how we are all dependent to our gynecologists and sonologists during these pregnancy stages....

Yep, we're highly dependent. We're lucky we have these technologies assisting us during our pregnancy. I can't imagine how to have a healthy pregnancy without these like in the old times.Or am I just being too impatient of not seeing my baby for 9 months?

I heard that pelvic diseases, STDs like Gonorrhea are one of the causes of Ectopic pregnancy.

Right. No offence to some but I've heard that those who have STDs are quite good candidates. It's indeed advisable to get treated first before having a baby. Otherwise the baby will definitely be put at risk.

@ Halia - Sadly, most ectopic pregnancies are put to a halt (surgically) because of the probability of their being unsuccessful.
